Covenants in the Bible (Part Two)

1. Introduction:

   A. Recap of last week: Dispensational view, Covenantal View

   B. Relational view and the heart of God, the heart of man

   C. All to one end: Being the children that God desires

2. Importance of the Covenant with Abraham:

   A. Book of Genesis sets the stage for all of spiritual history

   B. Abraham is the ‘father of ALL who believe’

   C. Genesis 12:1-9 God’s call to Abram

   D. Genesis 15:1-11 The Covenant Provisions

   E. Genesis 17 The Sign of the Covenant

3. The Land and the People:

   A. Greater understanding in hindsight – the ‘why’ of the land and the people

   B. Discuss: why the need for a Messiah, a chosen people, a promised land, the prophecies for expectations, the Old Testament feasts, sacrifices as a shadow

   C. Deuteronomy 8 and the riches of the land

   D. Parallels throughout history regarding ‘where you dwell’

   E. Eden, Egypt, wilderness, promised land, exile, ‘In Christ’

4. Example of the Difference in ‘the land’:

   A. Deuteronomy 11:8-32

   B. Need for total dependence upon God

   C. Provisions of the Covenant and the ‘If/Then’ nature of life

5. The Covenant Provisions and Reality:

   A. Old Testament History proves God’s faithfulness to His Word

   B. II Chronicles 14 and the reign of Asa

   C. Asa was obedient and the land had rest, no war, a time of peace (parallels, peace in the promised land and our peace in Christ)

   D. Discuss: specific provisions of the blessings/curses of the covenant in Leviticus 26 and how we see them play out in the lives of Old Testament kings

   E. Differences and Parallels: Old Covenant, New, In the promised land, ‘In Christ’
