Summary of the Summer Series: Historical Overview

Two years ago, during a class held in an art room, the topic of eternal rewards for living as committed disciples was proposed but not fully explored. Initially forgotten, the subject was revisited after class members reminded the speaker, Michael, leading to an in-depth study starting in December. This study expanded into a 15-session series on the five crowns mentioned in the New Testament, which highlight what God values in genuine discipleship. These crowns—incorruptible, rejoicing, righteousness, life, and glory—symbolize eternal recognition for faithful living, contrasting with temporary earthly rewards like the perishable wreaths of ancient games. The series aims to explore these crowns as a window into God’s desires, Christ’s accomplishments, and human purpose, emphasizing their significance for eternity.

The historical context begins with God’s creation of humanity in His image, tasked with dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:26-28). After the Fall, humanity lost this dominion, necessitating a plan of redemption through Christ, who restored the possibility of glory and honor (Hebrews 2:5-9). The New Testament introduces the concept of crowns, reflecting God’s recognition of faithful disciples. The church age, described as the “sacred secret” (Ephesians 3), reveals Gentiles as co-heirs with Christ, empowered to continue His work. Living as disciples now determines eternal rewards, with the crowns signifying lasting praise, glory, and honor at Christ’s return (1 Peter 1:6-7).

The overview traces biblical history from Eden, through the Fall, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and the exile, to Christ’s redemptive work and the church age. Future events include the rapture, tribulation, millennial kingdom, and final paradise, where believers’ actions today shape their eternal experience. The series encourages deeper study of these truths to understand God’s purpose and live worthy of eternal rewards.
