In Genesis 6, the LORD gave Noah instructions to build the ark because He said He would destroy the earth with a flood. And the condition to be saved from that flood was for Noah and his family to get busy and build the ark until it was finished, even though the people around him thought he was crazy. Gather 2 pair (male and female) of all unclean animals and 7 pair (male and female) of all clean beasts and all provisions; and enter the ark WHEN the LORD told him, thereby being saved in/out of/during the flood. So it seems that part of the covenant was unconditional and part was conditional. The unconditional part was the promise that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood of water; so the rainbow was the token of that covenant. The conditional part was to heed God’s commands to be saved out of the flood.
