A. The debate rages on to this day (Beth Moore and John Macarthur)
B. BRIEFLY: where to find the scriptural evidence and why of disagreement
C. An area for personal study if you have the interest and desire
3. Chapter 3:1-7
A. Qualifications for Overseers
B. “This saying is trustworthy” – number of occurrences, significance and meaning
C. High standard for leadership and long list of requirements to lead (grace or works?)
D. A few to highlight: self-controlled, able to teach, not a lover of money
E. Discuss: verses 6,7 – meaning, ‘condemnation of the devil’, ‘snare of the devil’
4. Chapter 3:8-13
A. Qualifications for Deacons
B. Discuss: What is the Biblical difference between an overseer and a deacon?
C. How do the requirements for service differ between the two and why?
D. Romans 12:4-8, everyone has a function in the Body of Christ
E. Romans 12:9-21, requirements for all believers, regardless of function
5. Chapter 3:14-15
A. How one is to ‘behave’ in the church and what are the ramifications?
B. The Biblical meaning of the word ‘church’
C. Discuss: How is the ‘church’ the ‘pillar and support of the truth’ and how is the contemporary church doing in fulfilling that role?
